Is Bruce Lee’s first directorial film a guerrilla shoot?

Bruce Lee, the superstar who sparked the Hong Kong and Kung Fu movie booms around the world, passed away after completing four major films in about two years.

The third work, “The way of the dragon” is said to be the greatest masterpiece.

Prior to that, Hong Kong’s small professional, Golden Harvest, signed a contract to star in two movies with a lot of money, and it became a big hit that rewrote the history of Hong Kong cinema.

“The Big Boss”

“Fist of Fury”

After completing the two contracted films, Golden Harvest President Raymond Chow proposes that the two form a joint company in order to prevent Bruce Lee from being recruited by others.

This was the birth of Concorde Productions, with Bruce Lee as the president, and the first production was “The way of the dragon”.

Bruce Lee, who has become a big star with two major hits so far, was dissatisfied with the poor film production system in Hong Kong.

Until he triumphantly returned to Hong Kong, he had been involved as a cast member and action coaching staff, because the level of the production system was incomparably low compared to the American film and television worlds.

So, not only as an actor, but also as a producer, he thoroughly studied and adopted American-style, efficient filmmaking techniques, and decided to write and direct on his own.

Above all, the feature of this movie is that it is the first Hong Kong movie to be filmed in Rome, Italy.

The cost is different from shooting in your own studio.

Location shooting is tough unless you can shoot fairly efficiently.

Hong Kong films of the time traditionally do not have a scenario.

For the staff, in a sense, shooting will proceed in a haphazard manner, so there is no way to proceed with the work in a planned and efficient manner.

However, Bruce Lee prepared a detailed “shooting plan” in addition to the complete scenario, and challenged this shooting.

Tadashi Nishimoto, a Japanese cameraman, was in charge of shooting this movie.

And the climax of the movie is a duel with Chuck Norris, who is now treated as a legend among American action movie actors.

Chuck Norris was famous in the world as a karate champion at the time, but this is his first appearance in a full-fledged movie.

He was approached by Bruce Lee, with whom he hit it off as a martial artist.

The ancient arena “Colosseum” was chosen as the stage for this one-on-one battle.

This setting was used in Hong Kong films of the time. I think the level of entertainment is quite high.

From here, in a sense, the inside story where you can enjoy the special effects technique.

Since the Colosseum is a tourist spot, there are places where tourists can enter, such as corridors.

Bruce Lee, who was completely unknown in Europe at the time, was able to do it, but it seems that all the scenes such as running through the corridors of the Colosseum looking for enemies were all shot by guerrillas.

I’m taking pictures when the other tourists are gone.

It’s the same as what we used to do when we were students.

And the scenes where you fight enemies indoors in the Colosseum were filmed on a set in a studio in Hong Kong.

The “ingenuity” of making this set look like the Colosseum is simple yet effective.

If you just want to do an action, you can create a closed space like “a room in the Colosseum”.

However, in the end, I’m particular about making people think, “It’s a part of that Colosseum that everyone knows.”

This is expressed by showing the depth of the fighting scene, rather than just making it a closed space.

Part of the background has no walls, and you can see the structure across the outdoor arena in the distance, and depending on the composition, you can see a dark passage that stretches far beyond.

Expressing this depth with a two-dimensional “photograph” is simple yet effective.

The photo is a still photo taken together when I was shooting a guerrilla shoot on site.

I magnify it, put it on the wall of the set, and shoot in front of it.

Of course, there is also the knowledge that “movie shooting is done in the studio,” and modern audiences will immediately understand that a bright outdoor background is “photography, even considering the situation.” I guess.

However, it is surprisingly difficult to notice that the background of the long passageway behind is also a photograph pasted on the wall.

Some people laugh at such simple SFX.

To begin with, there are people who dislike the use of visual tricks and argue that if a long passageway is reflected in the film, it is the right movie to actually build such a set and shoot it.

I don’t think so at all.

Rather than actually creating a set with depth, I think that it is much more interesting and high-quality as a movie to express the depth by pasting photos.

In today’s world, it would be possible to synthesize images made with CG instead of pasting guerilla shots.

However, I think that the strength of vitality is different between relying on CG to solve everything immediately and using a completely analog method to forcefully create an atmosphere.

As a person who likes video production, even if someone says, “This is a CG synthesis,” I’ll just say, “Hmm.” It’s 100 times more interesting to be broken, and I want to revisit that part and be happy.

Speaking of Bruce Lee, he is a rare action star and the founder of mixed martial arts, so it is normal to talk about “action” full of his charm, but this time, the legendary “Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris” I tried to explain the “paste photo” in the background of the action scene.

As a bit of knowledge, I would like to add that Bruce Lee is in charge of the meowing of the kitten that appears in this scene.
