「ACRI」

「π」

What is the appeal of cult movies?

In the first place, we can’t proceed without defining a cult movie, but the definition is not that strict.

At least here, take the fluffy image.

My image of a “cult movie” is a movie that does not try to put together the subject matter, story, direction, etc. in an orthodox manner, but has a slightly distorted balance and yet has a strange charm.

Cult movies change their subject with the times.

“Star Wars” and “Blade Runner” have the impression of orthodox blockbuster movies nowadays, but at the time of their release, they were rated as huge independent films full of primitive analog special effects, and they were considered cult movies. was one.

If you think so, you may feel that the threshold for cult movies is high, both in terms of scale and quality.

However, these are special “blockbusters” among cult movies.

So what are some cult movies that aren’t blockbusters?

I will list my favorite works on my own.

“Altered States”

“Dogra Magra”

“Kageroza”

“ACRI”

“π”

“Altered States” is a story about a scientist who uses drugs to trace back the memories of mankind.

“Dogra Magra” is a strange work that seems to be both a mystery and a sci-fi based on one of Japan’s three great novels.

“Kageroza” has the atmosphere of a mysterious movie when Kyoka Izumi’s original work is made into a video with a mysterious flavor.

“ACRI” is an excellent sci-fi depicting a mermaid as an unidentified creature, which is rare in Japanese movies.

“π” is the story of a mathematician who pursues the sequence of numbers that rule the world.

Each one is a slightly different subject.

And what they have in common is that the images are beautiful and attractive.

It can be said that the combination of the somewhat insane world view and visual beauty doubles the mysterious charm.

A cult movie through the eyes of an audience

In this way, in a nutshell, it is a cult movie that is a “quirky movie”, so it is not a work that will appeal to everyone.

However, it can be said that it is a genre that gains fans, although it is a small number, as it is said to be a so-called “cult popularity”.

As the modern age is said to be “the era of moving images”, familiar places are overflowing with moving images.

Some of them include content like movies, and it is possible that you are already tired of “ordinary works” because you can easily watch works using your smartphone in your spare time.

Of course, if your favorite actors are in the film, I think you’ll be able to enjoy the orthodox content, but what if that’s not the case?

I don’t think it’s possible to take the time to watch an orthodox indie film by a completely unknown performer.

Even though it is a low-budget work and has many negative points, as a motivation to appreciate it, I think that “it has a strange charm that ordinary works do not have” will work effectively.

In fact, there is another merit for the creators to make a “cult movie”.

The idea itself is perverted, and it doesn’t matter if the audience doesn’t know about it, so I’m going to tell them secretly.

Cult movies have a peculiar “distortion”.

For example, in the previously mentioned Kageroza, as a strange production, we edited footage that would normally not be connected.

Although each image is beautiful, it is a great attraction that you can feel a mysterious world by connecting it in a strange and absurd way.

Our DIY films sometimes end up with unnatural edits for completely different reasons.

As you will soon understand if you experience it, it is actually quite difficult to connect the images naturally and finish them.

And that unnaturalness comes from “failure”, but if you dare to mix in a strange production, the whole unnaturalness may feel like “aimed production” think.

Of course, it is necessary to have charm such as the interest of the subject matter and the strangeness of the story that surpass the “distortion”, but as a result, the lack of the ability to neatly summarize like a professional is a positive “potential” “there is.

If that’s the case, it might be a privilege for film lovers like us, who aren’t professional filmmakers, to be able to create such works.

In that sense, I actually think DIY movies and cult movies go well together.
