Creatures are the charm of B-movies

There are various kinds of movies, and the target of interest varies greatly depending on the difference in taste.

I tend to enjoy wide-ranging and shallow films, but when it comes to making my own films, I find it more appealing to use props, stage props, and special-effects movies that are elaborated with image synthesis.

In particular, movies featuring strange creatures called “creatures” are a genre I love for the enjoyment of plastic design.
When you say creatures, think primarily of fictional monsters, dinosaurs, and so on.
In the olden days, special effects god Ray Harryhausen’s “Sinbad’s 7th Voyage”, “Alien” in the 70’s, and recently “Jurassic World” are typical creature movies.

In a nutshell, the appeal of this kind of movie is that “even though they are artificial monsters, they move around realistically as if they were alive and confront humans.”

The point is “design” and “movement”.

For example, there is model work like a plastic model.
There are many modelers who make detailed models of monsters such as Godzilla and aliens as objects to appreciate as objects.
However, most of them are based on the premise of “making models as statues.”

While expressing “dynamism that seems to start moving at any moment” and “texture” with crafting techniques, it is basically a “hard model”.
In other words, it is a model that does not actually move.
Of course, in terms of modeling, it’s a great reference, but I feel that there is a completely different kind of overwhelming difficulty in the “shooting model” that moves in front of the camera.

There is also a problem with special materials

If you want to create a realistic “moving creature”, the first thing you will encounter is the selection of materials.
Easy-to-use clays for modeling are sold for various purposes, but they tend to be hard in the finished product.
It cannot be used on moving parts.

In the world of movies, urethane foam and latex rubber are mainly used as materials for making “moving models.”

In particular, when molding the skin, it is common to use a material called “foam rubber,” which is made by mixing two types of chemicals and baking them in an oven like making a cake.

However, in order to use this material, it is necessary to make plaster molds for all the parts, and the material itself is expensive.
It is suitable for mass production like an industrial product based on a precise design, but it is not suitable for making a model through trial and error like a hobby movie.

Another “latex rubber” is liquid natural rubber.
The main usage is to apply it to the surface of a model made of urethane or the like to give it a skin feel.

However, with regard to this material, the natural rubber deteriorates and becomes tattered and sticky, so we have no choice but to use it immediately for shooting and throw it away after completion.
It’s a difficult material to use from my point of view, “I want to reuse it because I made it.”

Substitute material that arrived

I am always trying to find cheap and easy-to-use materials through trial and error.
Until recently, I was experimenting with the possibility that “vinyl acetate resin”, which is used as a bond for woodworking, has a certain degree of flexibility even after curing.

In conclusion, although the model made of vinyl acetate resin maintains a reasonable degree of softness immediately after completion, it hardens after that and loses its flexibility as a model, which is a fatal flaw. became.
It was no different from latex rubber in that it had to be thrown away.

However, when I tried to make a dinosaur skin with this “vinyl acetate resin”, I used an industrial silicone caulking agent instead of making a mold with plaster, which gave me the next hint.

Silicon caulking agent is a rubber-like material that is applied between the aluminum and glass of the sash window.
Originally, it is not a material for crafts, so there are some parts that are difficult to handle, but as a molding material, it is attractive because it is considerably cheaper than silicone for model work.

The finished mold has elasticity, so if you make a copy of it with clay, it has the advantage of being easy to peel off after drying.

Naturally, the idea of using the softness of silicone to make the skin part itself, which is made from a mold, also comes from silicone.

It’s just that silicon caulk has a feature that can’t be painted at all.
Therefore, caulking was not a candidate as a material for “creature skin” that must be painted.

However, I learned that there is a caulking agent called “modified silicon”, although it is about 20% more expensive than the normal silicon caulking agent.
The feature is that it can be painted after drying even though it is silicone.

I’m currently preparing to make a comedic dinosaur movie called “Dinosaur Spirits”.
I have finished creating the scenario and storyboards, and am now working on the dinosaur model.
By making a promotional video featuring dinosaurs first, I want to gather performers and other collaborators through the DIY movie club.

Several types of dinosaurs appear in this work. A skin made of modified silicone extracted from a silicone caulking agent mold is pasted.
So far, I think it’s in a decent state, such as flexibility.

Instead of using a mold, the body, tail, etc., are modeled with a spatula while applying denatured silicone directly to the surface of the urethane dinosaur model, just like modeling clay.

I think that there will be various problems after this, but I think I can establish a basic way to make it, so in my DIY movies, it seems that “transformed silicon” will be the main material for creature models.

I would appreciate it if you could share the article if it is helpful.
