Imprinting in childhood called Hiroshi Kawaguchi expedition

The influence I received when I was a child is enormous, and I think that it will probably follow me for the rest of my life in some way.

When I was in elementary school and junior high school, I loved watching the TV program “Wednesday Special Hiroshi Kawaguchi Expedition”, and I wanted to imitate it, so I started imitating movie making.

After that, my hobby of video production was a side job when I was a salaried worker, and now I am a freelance video producer.

At the end of 2022, a book titled “Fake and Passion: Hiroshi Kawaguchi Expedition’s ‘Truth'” (written by Petit Kashima) was published. At the end of the 1980s, I made a film about Hiroshi Kawaguchi’s Expedition, which I had reconfigured in my own way.

This work, which has an exaggerated title, “Wednesday Special THE MOVIE Crystal Skull Legend”, is the first work I have completed, and it is a feature film that has been made with the greatest attention to detail.

I spent 3 years of my university life working on the production, and I was fascinated by the appeal of filmmaking.

The reason is that the BGM that flows throughout the movie is based on the soundtrack LP of the movie, which is completely in violation of the copyright.

At the time of production, I didn’t have the idea of releasing it to an unspecified number of people like I do now. I was using the sound source of the LP that I collected earnestly.

Even if we were to look up songs, there was no Internet like there is now, so when we were watching a foreign film theater on TV, we would accidentally find out, “This is the BGM of this part!”

Since the film is long, I didn’t have a chance to show it at private screenings, but the copies of the VHS tapes I personally gave to like-minded people caught the eye of other people, and it became an opportunity to make film friends. It is a work that has become.

Analog media more robust than digital media

I always wanted to make a version with the background music replaced and release it, but the other day, when I was tidying up, I came across an 8mm tape I shot, so I decided to take the plunge and transfer the footage to my PC. I took it in.

Since the old tape was 35 years old, I was prepared for the deterioration of the tape, but surprisingly, the 8mm tape at that time had almost no image deterioration.

Of course, the resolution is incomparably lower than the images we are used to seeing today, so the overall image quality is lackluster, but even so, I was surprised by the robustness of analog tape.

Probably, if it was a DVD or Blu-ray, the data would have deteriorated in this half of the period, and it would not have been possible to check the contents at all.

In fact, from the perspective of “durability”, digital media is overwhelmingly weaker than analog media.

When the world is digitalized and everyone wants to buy new video equipment all at once, the manufacturers don’t give out such negative information, so it’s not well known to the general public.

Therefore, it is actually quite dangerous to dispose of old video tapes because they have been copied to DVD.

Anyway, what I feel again this time is the effect of video as a time capsule device.

It’s been more than 30 years since the filming, so there are people I haven’t heard from and people who have already passed away.

When I see the scene where they and I are having so much fun filming, rather than saying, “How’s the movie going?”

Enjoy changes in judgment over time

There were also new discoveries.

At that time, I thought, “Many independent films look cheap because the images are too blurry,” and I gave priority to “stabilizing the screen.”

For that reason, even if the performance was good, the camera shook a little, so it was NG.

However, of course, if you do so many reshoots, the acting will become more and more unnatural and the tension will drop.

Looking at it objectively, there were many parts in the first or second video that were much more natural and lively.

In particular, in the action scenes that were taken with Bruce Lee in mind, the speed of the kick slowed down every time the shoot was repeated, and the setup became too smooth and fake.

At that time, it seems that there are many shots that are better for the video that was judged as NG.

Unlike those days, non-linear editing using a current personal computer is very easy.

At first, I simply thought, “Let’s re-edit it to the same state with slightly better image quality and replace the BGM,” but by re-editing it again, “Maybe I can bring out the charm that was originally supposed to come out for the first time.” I feel

This work consists of 30 hours worth of filmed footage. It’s a long story about 2 hours when completed.

After it’s completed, I’d like to release a “micro-movie” that can be viewed on smartphones in 10-minute segments so that it’s easier to watch in your spare time.

I’m glad if you can use it as a reference.
