水曜スペシャル「川口浩探検隊」とは何だったのか？
昭和の名物番組「川口浩探検シリーズ」
昭和の名物番組のひとつに挙げられるのが、水曜スペシャル「川口浩探検シリーズ」でしょう。
最近では知らない人の方が多いので、ごく簡単に説明すると、俳優の川口浩が探検隊の隊長になり、世界各地の秘境に行って、その土地の風土を紹介しつつ、謎に挑むという番組です。
いわゆるヤラセの本家とか、ドキュメンタリーとは呼べないとか、批判の的ともなった番組です。
しかし、そもそも番組の企画書にどう書いてあったか知りませんが、これは「ドキュメンタリー」とか「情報番組」というような、ジャンルのものではなかったはずです。
昔は、大の大人でもドラマの悪役や、プロレスの悪役レスラーを悪人と勘違いして、カミソリ入りの手紙を送りつけたと言います。
虚構を楽しむところまで精神的に成熟していなかったのでしょうから、テレビで本当らしいウソを作ると、受け入れられなかった人も多かったことは想像できます。
令和時代の現代でも、特に年配の人の中には、「テレビや新聞は真実を伝えている」と信じている人が多いようです。
無知なことは残念ですが、ある意味では純粋なのでしょう。
旅番組としての価値」
さて、番組を見直すと分かりますが、まず、紀行番組の要素があります。
今のように、一般庶民が手軽に海外旅行に行く時代ではありません。
その外国の風景、風土、特徴などをコンパクトにまとめた冒頭部分は、大いに異国への好奇心をかきたてられたものです。
この冒頭部分は、今、見直してもしっかりしていて、放送中の「世界ふしぎ発見」と比べても遜色ない内容です。この部分の正確さ、リアルさが実は重要なのです。 そしてその土地ならではのローカルな情報が加わります。

フィクションと探検の融合
ここからが作り手の腕のみせどころです。
地元の東スポ的なタブロイド紙に載った、「家畜が吸血コウモリに血を吸われた」とか「ジャンルの奥地に凄い滝がある」という情報にフィクションを加えて、探検隊が追うべき謎を設定しているんです。
その前提を整えた上で、出演者達による「壮大な探検ごっこ」が始まります。
「壮大な探検ごっこ」というのは決してバカにした表現ではありません。
この番組の立派なコンセプトだと思っていいでしょう。
本格的な登山や洞窟のケイビングの紹介の要素もあり、実際にはかなり危険も伴っています。
ちょうどプロレスの力道山が、空手の大山倍達に「空手チョップ」を習って、必殺技として使い、観客を熱狂させたのと似ています。
あれは、あくまでも「空手の技」の真似で、空手の技そのものではありません。
大山と力道山には色々と確執があったそうで、後に大山が力道山の墓前で「お前が空手の名前を広めてくれたことには感謝するよ」と言ったそうです。
本物の空手でなくても、「空手チョップ」が流行することで、空手に入門した人も多かったに違いありません。
川口浩の探検ごっこも同じような功績が各方面にあります。
「辺境作家」でベストセラーを持つ、高野秀行氏も、川口浩探検隊の影響で早稲田大学探検部に入ったと公言していますし、何より、テレビ番組としてもひとつのフォーマットを確立したと思います。
川口浩というキャスティングの妙
考えてみると、隊長に川口浩、というキャスティングも絶妙です。
そもそも川口浩という人が、実際に自分で探検ごっこをしたくて「川口プロモーション」という会社から金を出して作っている番組です。
テレビ局の企画で「川口浩が隊長役としてオファーされて受けた」というのとは、思い入れが違うのです。
その思いの強さが、視聴者(主に子供)に伝わったと思っています。
当時の大人は、川口浩が大作家と大女優の息子で、本人も映画スターとして多くの主演作品を持っていることを知っていたから、「川口浩が探検隊長を演じている」と認識していたでしょう。
しかし、当時の子供である我々にとっては、俳優・川口浩は馴染みがありません。
ジャングルに行って、ちょっとわざとらしく蛇やサソリに襲われたり、怪獣めいた名前の生物を探す行為も、本当か嘘か半信半疑でした。
「作り話だろう」と思いつつも、「こんな大の大人たちが真剣な顔でやってるんだから、もしかして本当なんじゃないか？」という、いわば魔法にかけられていた感覚があります。
おそらくこれは、作り手達が安易に「こうしておけば観客は満足する」とたかをくくった姿勢でいたら生まれない状況です。
「自分達が楽しみながら、それを突き詰めれば面白くなるはずだ」という信念を持って、「本気で遊んだ結果」が生む魅力なのでしょう。
これは円谷プロの作品群にも共通する、魅力の理由だと思います。
本気の遊びが生む創造性
時代は変わり、誰でも手軽に映像を撮影できたり、海外旅行に行けたりする世の中になりました。
さまざまな事に手を出せる状況になったことで、大人たちにひとつの提案があるとすれば、「本気のごっこ遊び」をしよう、ということです。
実際にやってみると分かりますが、子供の頃に楽しかった遊びは、大人になっても大抵楽しいものです。
「泥んこ遊び」が「趣味の陶芸」に言い方を変え、「仮面ライダーごっこ」が「演劇」になり、「図画工作」の類いが「芸術活動」に名前を変えているだけです。
我々はその中の一つ、「探検ごっこ」を「映像作品づくり」と組み合わせています。
子供の頃に夢中になった川口浩探検隊を、まさに川口浩本人が味わったであろう楽しさを味わいたくて、「チームウェンズデイ探検シリーズ」と銘打って映像作品にしているわけです。
このシリーズには、バラエティー番組によくあるような、ヤラセの内輪受け的、笑いの要素はありません。
それは大人向けの「安易なおふざけ」に過ぎないと考えるからです。
結果として笑いが起きる分には構いませんが、あくまでも作り手の姿勢としては「本気で遊ぶ」なのです。
この作品を見た子供たちには、虚実が曖昧になる魔法を感じてほしいと思います。
また、大人であれば、作品を通じて「本気で遊ぶ」楽しさを思い出して欲しいと願っています。
実はその「大真面目なごっこ遊びの面白さ」が川口浩探検隊の本質のような気がするのです。

What Was the “Hiroshi Kawaguchi Expedition Series” All About?
One of the most iconic TV programs from Japan’s Showa era was the Wednesday Special: Hiroshi Kawaguchi Expedition Series.
Since many people today may not be familiar with it, here’s a brief explanation: actor Hiroshi Kawaguchi led an expedition team to remote corners of the world, introducing local climates and cultures while pursuing mysterious phenomena.
Not a Documentary, but a Grand Adventure
The show was often criticized—called staged or not a true documentary. But perhaps it was never meant to be categorized as a documentary or informational program in the first place.
Back then, even adults would mistake villains in dramas or wrestling heels for real bad guys, sometimes sending razor-filled letters. People hadn’t yet matured enough to enjoy fiction for fiction’s sake, so when TV presented convincing fabrications, many couldn’t accept them.
Even today, especially among older generations, there are still many who believe that TV and newspapers convey only the truth. It’s unfortunate, but in a way, it’s a kind of purity.
Its Value as a Travel Program
Rewatching the show reveals its travelogue elements. At the time, ordinary people couldn’t easily travel abroad. The opening segments, which compactly introduced foreign scenery, climate, and customs, stirred deep curiosity about distant lands.
These segments still hold up today and rival the quality of current programs like Sekai Fushigi Hakken. Their accuracy and realism are crucial, and they often included unique local insights.
(Fun fact: Toshiyuki Fujioka, one of the writers for Sekai Fushigi Hakken, also worked on Kawaguchi’s Expedition Series and even appeared as a team member.)
Blending Fiction with Exploration
Here’s where the creators showed their skill. They took local tabloid stories—like livestock being attacked by vampire bats or rumors of a massive waterfall deep in the jungle—and added fictional elements to create mysteries for the expedition team to pursue.
With that setup, the cast embarked on a “grand pretend expedition.”
Calling it “pretend” isn’t dismissive—it’s actually a core concept of the show. The program included serious mountain climbing and cave exploration, which carried real risks.
It’s similar to how pro wrestler Rikidōzan learned the “karate chop” from karate master Masutatsu Ōyama and used it as a finishing move to thrill audiences. Though it wasn’t real karate, the move’s popularity led many to take up the martial art. Ōyama reportedly told Rikidōzan at his grave, “I thank you for spreading the name of karate.”
Likewise, Kawaguchi’s pretend expeditions inspired many. Bestselling “frontier writer” Hideyuki Takano has said he joined Waseda University’s exploration club because of the show. It also helped establish a new format for television programming.
Inspired Casting: Hiroshi Kawaguchi as Leader
Casting Hiroshi Kawaguchi as the expedition leader was a stroke of genius.
He wasn’t just hired by a TV station—he funded the show himself through his company, Kawaguchi Promotion, because he genuinely wanted to go on these adventures. That passion came through to viewers, especially children.
Adults at the time knew Kawaguchi as the son of a famous writer and actress, and a movie star in his own right. So they saw him as “playing” the role of expedition leader. But for us kids, he was simply the real deal.
Watching him venture into jungles, get attacked by snakes and scorpions, and search for creatures with monster-like names—whether real or fake—was magical. We knew it might be made-up, but the serious expressions of the adults made us wonder, “Could it be real?”
This magic wouldn’t have happened if the creators had taken a lazy “just give the audience what they want” approach. It was born from their belief that “if we enjoy it and pursue it seriously, it’ll be fun.” That’s the charm of playing seriously—a trait shared by the works of Tsuburaya Productions.
Serious Play Sparks Creativity
Times have changed. Now anyone can shoot video or travel abroad easily. With so many possibilities, here’s a proposal for adults: let’s engage in “serious pretend play.”
Try it, and you’ll see—games we loved as kids are still fun as adults. Mud play becomes pottery. Playing Kamen Rider becomes theater. Arts and crafts become artistic expression.
We’ve combined one of those childhood games—pretend exploration—with filmmaking.
Inspired by the joy Hiroshi Kawaguchi must have felt, we’ve created our own series: Team Wednesday Expedition Series.
Unlike typical variety shows, our series doesn’t include staged jokes or insider humor. We see that as shallow adult silliness. If laughter happens naturally, that’s fine—but our stance is to “play seriously.”
We hope children watching will feel the magic of blurred lines between truth and fiction. And for adults, we hope our work rekindles the joy of serious play.
In fact, that joy may be the true essence of Hiroshi Kawaguchi’s Expedition Series.
