私は元々工作が好きなんですが、粘土造形のように一点ものの工作だけでなく、木工職人のように効率よく同じものを量産する工程も好きで、その工程作り自体に興味があったりします。

 

今回は、たまたま依頼があった、カチンコの制作工程を紹介してみます。

ちょうど、仕事で伝統工芸品の工房に出入りしていることもあって、職人の人たちの作業を見て、自分でも木工をやりたくなっていたところでした。

まずは、同じものを量産する事を考えて、厚紙で型紙を制作します。

型紙と使うメリットは、いちいち定規を使って切断線を書き込む手間を省いたりすることですが、実際に型紙を使ってみると、手間が減るだけでなく、部品の精度も高くなることが分かります。

カチンコは２本の角材と１枚の板で構成されるので、そのサイズに合わせた型紙を厚紙で作ります。

 

まずは型紙を使って木材の部品を切断します。

角材はパイン材。

板は１００円均一ショップで購入したもの。

角材部分は、白と黒の縞模様に塗り分けます。

まず、全体に白を塗り、型紙で塗り分けの範囲を鉛筆で囲み、マスキングテープで保護した後、黒を塗ります。

暗い色を後に塗るのが基本です。

ペンキは匂いの無い水性ペンキを使っているので、筆や刷毛は水で洗うことが出来ます。

下の写真は、マスキングテープをはがしたところです。

２本の角材は開閉できるように小型のヒンジで繋ぎますが、それだけだと、２本の角材にねじれが生じて、閉じたときに揃いません。

そのため、角材の並行を保つために、カバーを取り付けることにします。

ヒンジ部のカバーは、薄いポリプロピレンの板です。

100円均一ショップで購入したファイルの表紙を使っています。

型紙に合わせて切断し、折り曲げます。

角材と板は長いボルトで接続していますが、フリーハンドで穴を開けると垂直な穴が開けられず、真っすぐに取り付けられません。

そのため、廃材を利用して、簡易旋盤を作りました。

カチンコの文字表示部分は、100円均一ショップで購入した、ホワイトボードシートを貼ります。

文字部分は、黒シールを切り抜いて貼り付けています。

カチンコは、カメラとは別の録音機材で音声の同時録音を行なう時に、同期を合わせるため、カメラの前で音を鳴らす道具です。

大量の映像素材を撮影する場合、映像の初めに映像番号が映っている事で、編集時の整理がしやすいという利点もある、昔ながらの道具です。

 

撮影に使う道具も、市販のものを購入するだけでなく、自分で作るというのも、映画作りの楽しみの一つです。

How I Made a Custom Film Clapperboard

I’ve always enjoyed making things—not only one-of-a-kind creations like clay sculptures, but also the process of efficiently mass‑producing identical items, much like a woodworker. I’m fascinated by the workflow itself.

 

This time, I’d like to share the process of making a clapperboard, which I happened to be commissioned to create.

I’ve recently been visiting traditional craft workshops for work, and watching the artisans there made me want to try some woodworking myself.

To begin, I created a cardboard template, assuming I would be making multiple identical pieces.

The benefit of using a template is that it eliminates the need to draw cutting lines with a ruler each time. But once I actually used it, I realized it not only saves time—it also improves the accuracy of the parts.

A clapperboard consists of two wooden bars and one board, so I made templates from thick paper to match those dimensions.

 

First, I used the template to cut the wooden parts.

The bars are made of pine.

The board is something I bought at a 100‑yen shop.

The wooden bars are painted in a black‑and‑white stripe pattern.

First, I painted the entire surface white, then used the template to mark the areas to be painted black. After masking those areas with tape, I applied the black paint.

The basic rule is to paint the darker color last.

Since I used odorless water‑based paint, the brushes can be washed with water.

Below is the result after removing the masking tape.

The two wooden bars are connected with a small hinge so they can open and close, but using only a hinge causes the bars to twist, preventing them from aligning properly when closed.

To keep them parallel, I decided to add a cover.

The hinge cover is made from a thin polypropylene sheet.

I used the cover of a file folder purchased at a 100‑yen shop.

I cut and folded it according to the template.

The bars and the board are connected with long bolts, but drilling freehand makes it difficult to create perfectly vertical holes, resulting in misalignment.

So I made a simple drilling jig using scrap wood.

For the writing surface of the clapperboard, I applied a whiteboard sheet purchased at a 100‑yen shop.

The text is made by cutting out black adhesive sheets and sticking them on.

Here is the completed clapperboard.

A clapperboard is used to create a sync point when recording audio separately from the camera. By producing a sharp sound in front of the camera, the editor can easily match the audio and video later.

It’s also a traditional tool that helps organize footage, since the scene number appears at the beginning of each clip.

 

One of the joys of filmmaking is not only buying tools but also making your own.
