画面映えする「洋館セット」
ドラマの室内シーンは、洋館風のセットが多いと思いませんか？
NHKで作るような、ふんだんに予算を使えるようなドラマもそうですし、民放のドラマの多くも、よく見てみると室内シーンのセットが洋館風になっていることが多いと思います。
恐らく、セットとしてサマになって作りやすいことと、調度品が非常に画面映えすることが理由ではないかと思っています。
そういうシーンを見慣れているので、逆に言うと、室内シーンを洋館で撮影すればかなりそれらしく見える可能性があるのではないでしょうか。
当然、私が製作を想定しているのは、低予算の自主映画ですから、大金を掛けて本物の洋館を借り切ったり、映画や舞台美術のように、洋館のセットを作って撮影するというようなことは考えていません。
いつもこのメールマガジンなどで、私のアイデアを聞かされている人は予想がつくと思いますが、私が提案するのはミニチュアセットの活用です。
洋館のミニチュアセットを用意して、撮影したミニチュアセットに、別撮りした「人物」を合成して、洋館風の室内シーンを作ろうというわけです。
洋館のミニチュアセットも、特定の部屋のセットを作り込んでしまうと、流用が効きません。
ある程度、汎用性がある設計で作っておいて、壁や調度品の組み合わせを変えられるようにするべきでしょう。
そうすると、限られた材料の組み合わせを変えることで、別の場所のセットとして使うことが可能になります。
洋館のミニチュアセットを使う目的は、自主映画特有の「画面の貧しさ」を防ぐことです。
自主映画には使える予算があまりありませんから、どうしても庶民的な場面になりがちです。
少し広い部屋の中のシーンを撮影しようと思うと、レンタルの会議室をそのまま使って撮るしか無かったりします。
そうすると、「いかにも自主映画」というような、「貧しい絵面（えづら）」になりがちなんですね
もちろん、レンタル会議室を使っても、小道具を工夫したりすることで、会議室らしからぬ室内セットを作り込むことは可能です。
しかし、そのセッティングに掛かる時間を考えると、撮影コスト自体が膨れ上がるので、私は選択したくありません。
洋館だけでなく、SF風の室内にしても、和室にしても、ミニチュアセットなら実現は可能です。
「そんな風に撮影するのは邪道だよ」という批判は無視するとして、もちろん、この手法には弱点もあります。
背景と人物を合成しなければならないので、構図やカメラワークに制約が出ます。
また、合成映像を作るためには、工夫や技術が必要で、その上でも、合成映像は不自然になる可能性があります。
「この映像は合成している」ということを、完全には隠しきれない、一定の不自然さが出てしまう覚悟が必要です。
その不自然さが「マイナス」だとすれば、そのマイナスを上回るほどの「画面的な魅力」を作るための「合成映像」だと思ってください。

Have you noticed how many drama productions use Western-style mansion sets for indoor scenes? This holds true for big-budget productions, like those funded by NHK, and many commercial TV dramas as well.
Why is this? Likely because such sets are easy to construct in a visually appealing way, with furniture and decorations that naturally stand out on screen.
For that reason, shooting indoor scenes in a Western-style mansion could lend a similar professional appearance to your project.
A Low-Budget Approach for Indie Filmmakers
Of course, for low-budget indie films like the ones I envision, renting an actual mansion or constructing a full-scale set is out of the question.
As many readers familiar with my ideas might expect, my suggestion is to utilize miniature sets. By preparing a Western-style mansion miniature and compositing separately shot characters into the scene, you can create convincing mansion interiors on a budget.
Designing Adaptable Miniature Sets
When building a miniature mansion set, creating overly specific room designs can limit its reusability. Instead, aim for a modular design that allows walls and furnishings to be rearranged. This makes it possible to use the same materials to depict different spaces.
The purpose of using a miniature set is to combat the “visual poverty” often associated with indie films. With limited budgets, indie productions tend to rely on everyday settings, like rental meeting rooms, for indoor scenes. These settings often result in visually underwhelming frames that scream “low-budget production.”
While it’s possible to transform a meeting room into something unrecognizable with enough effort, the time and expense involved make this approach less practical. Miniature sets, however, can also represent other environments—be it sci-fi interiors or traditional Japanese rooms.
Challenges and Limitations of Composite Filmmaking
Some may criticize this approach as unconventional, but more importantly, it comes with its own challenges. Compositing characters onto a miniature background introduces restrictions in framing and camera movement. It also demands technical skill and creativity, with a risk of producing unnatural results.
It’s nearly impossible to completely hide the fact that such scenes are composited. However, think of this minor “unnaturalness” as a trade-off for creating compelling, visually striking imagery that enhances your film.
