A completely different scene just by connecting

When creating a single scene, it is difficult to realize the scene due to the naive belief that you have to create a literal “stage” that you imagine there, like a stage play.

A video work is different from a stage play that costs money.
While having fun, you can do the “sneaky way”.

For example, go to a coffee shop with an elegant atmosphere facing the garden of a Western-style building.
“I want a scene where they are talking in this coffee shop.”
I thought

To be honest, I need to negotiate with the owner of the coffee shop and rent the shop for a whole day to shoot.
I don’t know how much, but at the very least, the amount of money that will be sold on that day must be paid as a reward.

For film fundamentalists who say, “This is how a movie should be made,” that’s normal, and they say, “That’s why movies cost money,” but I have a big question.
Especially since we need to create works on a low budget, we have to question the “obviousness” more.

If you paid a fee and rented it out for the day, what would you do if it rained that day?
What if it’s windy?

I would have liked to have the scene of “drinking tea at a table in the garden in an elegant and bright light”, but I couldn’t get that scene even if I spent a lot of money.

On the other hand, what if we adopt a “sneaky way”?
It’s the “I would do it this way” way.

First, on a day when the weather and number of customers are ideal, the coffee shop is photographed as a “landscape”. (assuming you can use this video)

The interactions between the characters will take place on another day and in another place.
The conditions are a video of a coffee shop taken as a landscape,

  • similar lighting conditions
  • similar wind conditions
  • similar background condition

is to ensure

“A place with a similar background means a similar garden?”
The idea is still stupid.

This is also connected to the ingenuity of the storyboard, but if, for example, two people are sitting across a table and drinking tea, the background that can be reflected is very limited.
If a real garden is surrounded by hedges, it’s OK if the “hedge-like greenery” is reflected in the background in an out-of-focus state.
In reality, I look for places that meet the conditions, such as the garden of a private house, which is much smaller, or the corner of a park with a completely different scenery.

From the basics of the storyboard, it is necessary to have a video of the background of the coffee shop where the two are reflected, but here we purposely omit it to make it work.
Was this character sitting at one of the tables in the garden shown in the trailer? It’s good to have an illusion.
What you need is a way to hide the fact that you are shooting separately.

for example,

In the middle of a conversation, a character hears someone else’s laughter and turns his or her gaze
A customer laughing at a coffee shop (faces do not have to be visible)

What if you connect a video with

  • A shadow in dark clothes crosses the screen
  • A waiter going around adding tea (you don’t have to see his face)

Doesn’t it give the audience the impression that “two people are in a coffee shop in the garden”?

All you need is a set of teacups and a table.
It seems that I should find a friend who can lend me a plastic table that looks like it.
Maybe the table doesn’t show up at all and all you need is a stack of cardboard boxes to put the cups on.

The “sneaky way” is ingenuity itself.
In a foolish way, it should cost tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yen just for the location fee, but with this ingenuity, the actual cost should be close to zero.

The important thing is whether the scene will come true, but I think that by carefully planning the scene, the atmosphere will come out even better than when shooting in a rented space.

It’s not like “If you shoot in a good atmosphere, that atmosphere will come out”.
Perhaps, even if you rented out a café and filmed it, the background for the main scene of the conversation would not be reflected, and it is easy to imagine that people would ask, “Is there any point in renting a coffee shop?”

I used to shoot adventure movies a lot, and I used to go into caves deep in the mountains to shoot cave scenes.
In the cave, I honestly took a close-up conversation scene.

It’s hard to go to the cave with all the equipment.
When I think about going home, I don’t have time to take time to film the acting, and in reality, I have no choice but to proceed at the level of “It’s OK if I can say the lines according to the script”.

However, when I saw the finished product, I realized that about half of the images were fine as long as the background was pitch black.
It means that you can get almost the same footage without having to go through the trouble of shooting in a cave.

Since then, it has become a matter of course for the conversation scenes in the cave to be filmed separately at a nearby park at night and incorporated into the editing.
As a result, the number of trips to the cave was halved, and it was easier to shoot in the neighborhood, so I was able to spend more time acting, which actually improved the quality of the scenes.

There are a certain number of people who dislike these “cheating methods”.

  • soulless
  • Acting lies

That’s why.

However, isn’t it a plus alpha that should be sought only after all other conditions are met?
Even as a layman like me, I can understand the charm of adding something extra, but I think there are many works where, as a result of pursuing that, the important part fails.

I firmly believe that the appeal of low-budget films lies in the “enjoyment of ingenuity,” which is the exact opposite of film fundamentalism.

I’m glad if you can use it as a reference.
