A review of the SP method that synthesizes all backgrounds

The “stock footage” in the title is a very effective element of the “Masuda-style super previs method (SP method)” that I use to complete movies in an insanely short period of time.

For the members of the “DIY movie club” that I preside over, I will repeat the explanation every time, but here I will review the basics of the SP method.

In normal movies, the characters are mainly filmed in the following places.

  • studio
  • location

The purpose is, of course, to shoot a person with a “background” that matches the setting.

As you can see when you actually shoot, even if you make a very detailed and efficient plan, you can only shoot a small amount in one day.

For example, even if you shoot from morning to night, it is normal to get only 2 to 3 minutes of net footage.

In addition to that, “location shooting” takes “travel time”.

Even if you want to use only 5 seconds of footage of the main character standing in front of a waterfall, it will take a whole day to go to a place that fits the image and shoot.

Moreover, if it rains on the day you plan to go to the location, the shooting will be canceled and you will have to spend more time.

In the SP method that I experimented and adopted, all portraits were taken indoors in front of a green screen because I thought, “This method is time-consuming and costly.”

By synthesizing the green screen image of the person shot according to the composition designed in advance with the background image shot separately, we can create an image that is almost the same as the image taken by the performer at the location.

Since the shooting is indoors, it is not affected by the weather or time of day, and the “travel time” to the site can be minimized.

In terms of the number of days to hold down the filming schedule for the characters, we can shorten it by around 20%.

Some people say, “But you’re going to shoot a background video, aren’t you? Isn’t it the same?”

  • Go to the site with the staff and performers
  • indicate the steps
  • redo the play until it works

That takes a lot of effort and time.

On the other hand, in the case of background photography for compositing, the director himself can carry a camera and go to the site by himself and quickly shoot the necessary videos and photos.

Background footage for one scene can usually be shot in minutes, so I can shoot backgrounds for multiple scenes on the same day while traveling from location to location.

A further important advantage is that the background footage does not contain people, so it can be reused in different scenes and productions.

By going to the basin of a waterfall deep in the mountains and filming background images of various patterns, when I want to create a scene of the waterfall basin in another work, I don’t have to go to shoot again.

In this way, “images that are stored so that they do not need to be shot again” are called “stock images”.

Basically any shooting location can be a target for stock footage.

You don’t need any special equipment, and you can shoot with just a smartphone, but if you don’t shoot mechanically, you tend to leave the shot unintentionally. Masu.

Here are some tips for shooting a simple background video.

Vehicle

Vehicle scenes are often used to show movement of characters.

In the SP law, we do not do expensive “chartered shooting” or illegal “guerrilla shooting”, but shoot the image of the seat of the vehicle and use it as a background image.

As with other photo shoots, the first thing to consider is not to bother the people around you.

If possible, I would like to shoot in an unmanned state so as not to give suspicion that “I am being filmed without permission”.

In that sense, it would be difficult to photograph the inside of a commuter train or commuter bus.

I’m planning to photograph the vehicles that are on display at the Transportation Museum in a ready-to-ride condition.

For bullet trains and passenger planes, I consciously aim for the moment when they are unmanned.

Regarding the seat of the vehicle, the composition that can be shot is quite limited.

Basically, I stick with the composition of “shooting a person sitting by the window from the aisle side.”

Assuming that a person is sitting there, shoot with a well-balanced composition in mind.

Regardless of whether or not it will be used in the work, I would like to take a full video to show that I am in the vehicle in an easy-to-understand manner.

The other day, when I boarded an airplane on a business trip, I took a seat at the end of the plane, thinking of taking pictures.

Finally, when I turned around, I was able to shoot the entire vacant seat.

Since the shooting here needs to be done quickly, it will be a video rather than a still image.

Move while shooting, export a still image from the part that can be used even for a moment, and use it as a background image.

a place to sit

Indoors and park benches are places where it is easy to create a conversation scene.

I shoot while imagining, “If there were characters there, I would shoot from this side,” but at the stage of shooting stock footage, it is not yet decided what kind of scene it will be.

It is necessary to have a versatile shooting method.

So what we recommend is to focus on the place where the person is likely to be, and shoot while walking 360 degrees around it.

Again, we recommend taking videos.

By doing so, no matter what direction the person is photographed, the corresponding background will be reflected somewhere.

In the case of indoors, stick to the wall and shoot diagonally.

scenery main

There aren’t many options for “placing a person here” in tourist spots, the sea, or in nature, so I assume that and shoot the surroundings in 360 degrees.

Especially in tourist areas, the scenery that makes for a picture is so clear that you tend to shoot only in a specific direction. If there is no background on the opposite side of the scenery, there is a danger that the images will not be connected.

Therefore, whether or not it can be used will be decided later, and I will take a picture of the surroundings.

important point

Finally, a technical note.

1. Make the angle of view as wide as possible

Please shoot at the widest angle that the camera can shoot.

Even if you synthesize a person by zooming in, you can reproduce the background image at the time of zooming in by enlarging and trimming the background. On the other hand, if the background image is too narrow, we will not be able to handle it.

I use my Handycam with a wide conversion lens attached to take background shots.

2. The height of the camera is the height of the character’s face

If the “angle” of the background and the person shot with the green screen are not matched, the image will look unnatural.

As the safest method, we recommend that you follow the rule that “the camera should be at the height of the person’s face” and always keep the camera level.

In terms of production, images that are raised from below or looked down from above are attractive, but the difficulty of compositing jumps up.

Of course, you can freely shoot the images used as scenery, as they have nothing to do with compositing.

3. Watch out for camera shake

The background can be a moving image or a still image.

If there are moving objects in the background, such as leaves swaying in the wind, ocean waves, or cars in the city, make the background a video.

If there is nothing moving in the background, make it a static image. Because it works better.

For videos, use a tripod and shoot. If you cannot use a tripod, try not to move the camera as much as possible.

When using still images, as mentioned above, you can shoot a video and export the appropriate moment as a still image for use. Only still images can be exported.

When shooting, avoid fast movements to avoid camera shake.

Enriching your stock footage will allow you to create movies with less effort.

Even if you don’t have a specific project plan yet, if you think, “I think I can create a scene with this as a stage,” it will only take a few minutes, so I’m in the habit of shooting stock footage for the background. It is recommended that you attach

I’m glad if you can use it as a reference.
