Reasons for using primitive technology now

Recently, “CG” and “special effects” are sometimes recognized as different things, but originally, “special effects (special effects)” were classified in the following way.

  • miniature
  • animation
  • CG
  • stunt
  • dummy
  • synthesis

In other words, CG was also one of the special effects.

However, with the advancement of computer technology, the range of images that can be covered by CG has increased dramatically, so I think CG has come to be regarded as an independent method.

I don’t do “shooting”, so it’s true that the word “special effects (special shooting)” doesn’t fit.

In fact, even with 3DCG software such as “Blender”, most of the images you want to draw can be reproduced in CG. In combination with video editing software, it is possible to complete a work without performers and without using a camera.

What’s more, this “Blender” is amazing because it’s free software, even though you can create highly accurate images if you master it.

I myself can’t use it at all, but I think it would be very helpful to have a friend who can use it.

Putting that aside, the question is why, in an age when it is commonplace to use such versatile CG, are there still a certain number of people who use old-fashioned, orthodox “special effects techniques” that use miniature sets?

In conclusion, CG and old special effects (hereinafter referred to as analog special effects) have different types of charm.

Jurassic Park is probably the most successful movie that used CG.

Since I bought the Japanese version of the novel first, I have been looking forward to it for several years until it was made into a movie.

I remember the bizarre sight of long lines forming in front of every movie theater for hours.

To say that the CG dinosaurs I saw there was amazing, I can’t exaggerate, it was dizzying.

However, I later learned of the serious weakness of CG.

That is the fact that CG images quickly get boring.

Most of the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” were actually filmed using life-size models.

CG covers only the parts that move that can’t be expressed in the model.

Certainly, all the CG dinosaur images should be only around 10 minutes in total.

It is clear that the exquisite combination of “image using a model” and “CG image” is connected to the overwhelming appeal of “Jurassic Park”.

A few years later, the sequel movie “Jurassic Park 2” used several times the amount of CG images. The level of CG is much higher than the previous one, and it should have been a movie full of highlights, but it was boring.

This is not just my impression, but from the conversation between the young female customers who happened to be watching the same episode, I could tell the fact that “the amazingness of CG quickly gets boring.”

It was only a short period of time when people said, “It’s amazing because it uses CG.” I’m here.

The weak point of CG is that there is no “substance”?

Since movies are “images”, I think that visual illusion should be applied to a large extent.

The ideal of a “genuine-oriented” “film fundamentalist” would be to build a huge open set and make a film without tricks, but in this day and age, one movie can’t cost that much. .

So instead of actually creating an open set, we need to apply some kind of trick technology to create a similar video.

CG is of course effective as one of these methods, but once you become accustomed to seeing CG images, I feel that even amateurs can understand and feel “light”.

If I were to compare it to music, I would say that the image of an object is the “sound of an orchestral performance,” and the CG image is “an orchestral performance with electronic sounds.”

I feel that this is because CG has no substance.

If you look at the video that synthesizes the “miniature”, which is one of the same trick videos, it may not show the solidity of the real thing. I feel like I can express myself.

If you compare it to music, it’s like a live performance by a small band.

The charm of miniatures is also added

In any case, it is economically impossible for us to make all the images authentically in our DIY films.

Some scenes require trick footage.

Therefore, you have to choose between using CG or using analog special effects, but analog special effects, especially in the case of images using miniature sets, can add another element to your side.

“The charm of miniatures”.

“Miniatures” have an almost inexplicable, in a sense, irrational allure.

In the old days, there are miniature gardens and doll houses.

Candy toys, capsule toys, miscellaneous goods, etc. include miniature models that don’t make sense.

I can understand the appeal of miniature cakes and cute animals, but when it comes to miniature pipe chairs, beer cases, and construction site cones, I don’t understand the point, as I am happy to buy them.

I can’t help but think that just saying “a well-made miniature set” is fun and makes you want to own it.

The simple method of compositing a “miniature model” shot separately with a live-action video shot in advance so that it looks like the real thing, brings the simple pleasure of “just like the real thing” that the miniature set has to the video. bring.

As soon as you realize that CG is CG, you lose interest.

On the other hand, even if miniatures fail in their original purpose of “showing the real thing”, there is a high possibility that the attractiveness of “being a miniature” itself will be perceived as a plus.

“Hey, this is a miniature, so interesting!”

That’s what it means.

Of course, basically, I think it’s a premise to make an effort not to notice “it’s a miniature”.

If you don’t make that much effort, you’ll end up feeling “bruised,” like, “Isn’t this silly side good?”

If you’re lucky, you can hide the fact that it’s a miniature until the end. I think it might even be attractive.

For that reason, I incorporate scenes that utilize miniature sets in my work quite often.

I’m glad if you can use it as a reference.
