グリーンバック映画の新時代：出演者の交換とバージョン変更が可能な撮影手法
グリーンバック撮影の特徴
背景にグリーンやブルーのシートを張って、その前で撮影した映像は、「クロマキー」という合成処理ができます。
この技術をフル活用したのが、私が実践している「升田式スーパープリヴィズ法」で、最大のメリットは極端なまでの撮影スケジュールの圧縮ができる点です。
特に、撮影に10～30日掛かるような長編作品の場合は効果が大きくて、1／3～1／5の時間で撮影を終えることが可能になります。
そもそもこの「グリーンバック撮影」と「クロマキー合成」の組み合わせでできることをまとめると、
- 背景を変えられる
- 出演者を変えられる
という2点です。
まずは、背景を変えられることで、現地に行かなくてもその空間にいるような映像が撮れるため、大幅に撮影期間を短縮できる訳です。
実は、「撮影期間」の大半を占めるのは「撮影時間」ではなくて、「移動時間」と「待ち時間」だからです。
「移動時間」はロケ地に到着してからも発生します。
例えば「キャンプ場」でまとめて撮影する場合、大きな移動としては、キャンプ場に行くまでですが、撮影が始まってからも場面によって、キャンプ場内を歩いて移動する必要があります。
何十メートルも離れた場所から見た映像を1カット撮影するために、30分くらい費やしてしまうことも珍しくありません。
そして、待ち時間。
たまたま大きな雲が太陽を隠してしまって、光の状態が変わり、さっきまで撮っていた映像と繋がらなくなることが良くあります。
そんな場合は、雲から太陽が出るまで待つことになります。
監督は撮影現場で「どうすれば魅力的な演出になるか」を考えていると思われがちですが、実際は「撮影した映像が繋がるかどうか」を考えるのに精一杯です。
それに加えて、プロデューサーも兼任している場合は、「今日のスケジュール」「全体スケジュール」と「撮影内容」を天秤にかけて、「何を撮るか」「何を諦めるか」という判断をしながら撮影することになります。
もし、室内でグリーンバック撮影をすれば、「移動問題」「待ち問題」の大半は解決するので、その分の時間とエネルギーを別のところに注げるわけです。
もちろん、室内撮影は天候や撮影時刻の制約を受けないことも大きなメリットです。
「出演者を変えられる」というのは、前提として、「出演者を一人一人別々に撮影するやりかた」である必要があります。
ちょうど、アニメーション映画で声優が、別々にアフレコする状況と似ています。
もちろん、掛け合いをする相手と同時に撮影・録音すると、芝居的にはより魅力的にはなりますが、そのメリットより、別々に収録した方がトータルとしてメリットが大きい場合に有効です。
主にスケジュールの問題でしょう。
別々に撮影していれば、絵コンテの工夫などによって、後から別の出演者の映像を撮影して作品の中に組み込むことが出来ます。
- 撮影終了前に出演者が抜けてしまった場合
- 完成後に出演者都合で公開NGになった場合
という場合の危機管理になるだけでなく、
- キャストの入れ替えによる別バージョン
を楽しむ事もできます。
主役と敵役だけをそっくり交代したバージョンなどは、舞台劇なら実現可能ですが、映画ではなかなか実現できません。
グリーンバック映画なら、それを最低限のコストで作れるわけです。
私はこれを発展させて、「あなたが主演の映画が完成します」という「主演キット」を作ったりしています。

照明の難しさ
そんな、可能性の多いグリーンバック撮影ですが、撮影時にはコツがいります。
背景のグリーンが、一定の色に映っていないと、綺麗に合成できないんです。
「同一の色なんだから撮るだけで同じ色に写るでしょ？」
と思うかもしれませんが、実は全然違うんです。
照明が強く当たっている部分は白っぽく写り、照明から離れている部分は黒っぽく写ります。
室内で撮影する場合は、天井に近い上の部分は明るく、足元は暗くなります。
これを出来るだけムラなく一定の色にするためには、別の照明をグリーンバックシートだけに当てて調整しなければいけません。
人物には別途、照明を当てたりしますから、このセッティングは難しいことになります。
特に狭い場所で撮影する場合は、ベストの状況は作れないのが現実で、妥協点を探ることになります。
野外でグリーンバック撮影実験
一方で、野外でグリーンバック撮影するとどうなるでしょうか？
グリーンがムラになるという照明問題はほとんど発生しません。
太陽光はシートの上方にも下方にも満遍なく当たるので、色は一定になります。
シートにしわやたるみさえなければ、もっとも綺麗に合成できる映像が撮影できるでしょう。
また、広い野外ならではの撮影も可能です。
例えば、歩く場面。
狭い室内では、こちらに向かって歩いてくる映像を撮る場合など、実際には歩けないので、上手に足踏みして歩いている事を表現する必要があります。
当然、足元が写ると足踏みとバレてしまいますから、撮影できるのは上半身だけです。
ところが、野外で手持ち式のグリーンバックシートのセットを使えば、実際に歩きながらの映像も撮れるようになります。
一般的には、映画全体のうち、歩きながら撮影したい映像は数％しかないので、野外でのグリーンバック撮影は１回にまとめて行なえることが多いでしょう。
こんな、メリットが多いように思える野外でのグリーンバック撮影ですが、深刻な問題があります。
それは「風」。
2m x 2mくらいのグリーンバックシートのセットにとって、そよ風くらいの風でもセットが壊れるくらいの大きな力を受けてしまうんです。
私は以前、室内用のグリーンバック撮影用のスタンドを使って、野外でテスト撮影していた時に風にあおられて、スタンドを壊しました。
先日も、2m x 2mの新しいグリーンバックシートのセットを自作して、組み立てテストをしたのですが、やはり風にあおられて鉄製の支柱が曲がるアクシデントがありました。
結論からいうと、野外でのグリーンバック撮影は、１人か２人、必ずグリーンバック専属のスタッフを用意して、風にあおられたら逆らわずに地面に倒してかわす動作を練習しておく必要がありそうです。
無風状態だと、どこかに立てかけて撮影したくなりますが、ふいに風が吹いた時に飛ばされず、安全に倒れるようにセッティングしておかないと、支柱ごと飛ばされて人や車に当たる事故が発生する危険を感じました。
後日、シートをビニール製のものに変え、支柱の一部を金属から塩ビに変えた上で、設置を簡易にしたセットを作ってみました。

It is not uncommon to spend about 30 minutes to shoot a single shot of a video seen from a distance of dozens of meters.
And waiting time.
It often happens that a large cloud hides the sun, changes the lighting conditions, and makes it difficult to connect with the image that was taken earlier.
In that case, you’ll have to wait until the sun comes out of the clouds.
It is easy to think that the director is thinking about “how to make the production more attractive” at the shooting site, but in reality, it is all he can do to think about “whether the shot images will be connected”.

If you shoot with a green screen indoors, most of the “movement problems” and “waiting problems” will be solved, so you can put your time and energy elsewhere.
Of course, indoor shooting is also a big advantage that it is not restricted by weather or shooting time.

lighting difficulties
There are so many possibilities for green screen photography, but there are some tricks you need to know when shooting.
If the green in the background is not reflected in a certain color, it will not be possible to synthesize it beautifully.

Areas under strong lighting appear whitish, and areas away from the lighting appear blackish.
When shooting indoors, the upper part near the ceiling is bright and the foot is dark.
In order to make this color uniform and uniform as much as possible, it is necessary to illuminate only the green back sheet with a different light and make adjustments.
This setting is difficult because the person is illuminated separately.
Especially when shooting in tight spaces, the reality is that you can’t create the best conditions, so you’ll have to find a compromise.
Green screen shooting experiment outdoors
On the other hand, what happens when shooting outdoors with a green screen?
Lighting problems such as uneven greens are rare.
Sunlight hits the sheet evenly both above and below, so the color is consistent.
If there are no wrinkles or sag in the sheet, you will be able to shoot the most beautiful composite images.
In addition, it is possible to shoot only in the wide open field.
For example, a walking scene.
In a small room, if you want to shoot a video of someone walking towards you, you can’t actually walk, so you need to express that they are walking by stepping well.
Of course, if your feet are photographed, it will be obvious that you are stepping, so you can only shoot the upper body.
However, if you use a set of handheld green screen sheets outdoors, you will be able to shoot footage while actually walking.
In general, only a few percent of the footage you want to shoot while walking is in the entire movie, so outdoor green screen shooting can often be done in one shot.
Despite the many benefits of outdoor green screen photography, there are serious problems.
It is “wind”.
For a 2m x 2m green-backed sheet set, even a gentle breeze can take enough force to break the set.
In the past, I used a stand for indoor green screen shooting, and when I was doing test shooting outdoors, the stand was blown by the wind and broke.
The other day, I made a set of new 2m x 2m green screen sheets myself and tested the assembly, but again, there was an accident in which the steel posts were bent by the wind.
