自分で映画を作りたい人へ

決して多数派の意見ではありませんが、「自分で映画を作りたい」という人がいます。

私は、自分が10代の終わりから30年も、自主映画作りを続けてきて、その魅力を知っているので、そんな人には是非、映画作りが出来るようになって欲しいと思います。

よく、「映画作りには、いくら掛かりますか？」「どんなカメラが必要ですか？」と聞かれます。

結論から言うと、ピンからキリまであるので、企画によっては全財産を使っても足りないですし、逆に、限りなく無料に近い低コストで始めることも可能です。

ここでは、現実的に、大人の小遣いの範囲内で整えられる環境を提案してみます。

撮影機材

カメラについては、今回、簡単にしか触れません。

動画がデジタルデータとして撮影できるものであれば、何でもOKです。

「とりあえず始めてみたい」というのであれば、携帯電話のカメラしかなくても大きな問題もなく始められるのではないでしょうか？

もちろん、使い勝手から言えば、デジタルビデオカメラが適しています。

「どうせなら、動画撮影機能がある一眼レフの方がいい？」

これは良く聞く話ですが、端的に言って初心者にはオススメできません。一眼レフのメリットを充分に活かせるほど、スムーズに撮影が出来るとは思えないからです。

編集環境

「スマホやタブレットがあれば、それだけで撮影・編集まで出来る」という宣伝もありますが、これは、あくまでも「やってやれないことはない」ということです。

七輪と鍋さえあれば、どんな料理でも出来る、という類の話です。

撮影はともかく、タッチパネルを使って細かなビデオ編集をすることは現実的ではないでしょう。（上級者が、あえてそういう制約下で制作する企画は面白いと思いますが）

編集には、ごく標準的なパソコンが必要だと思ったほうがいいでしょう。

もし、パソコンをお持ちでないようなら、入手する必要が出てきます。

ビデオの編集には、「ビデオ編集ソフト」が必要になります。

パソコンで行なうビデオ編集はノンリニア編集といって、撮影した映像のデジタルデータをかなり自由自在に加工できます。ソフトの種類によって、この自由度に差が出てくるわけです。

「昔ながらの手法で作られた映画と同じような編集が出来ればよい」という場合、編集ソフトに必要な機能は、

• 映像のカット
• 映像の入れ替え
• データの書き出し

だけです。

これは、どんなにシンプルな編集ソフトにも備わっている機能です。（データの書き出しというのは、編集を終えた状態の動画ファイルを作成する機能です。無料体験版などのソフトによっては、この「データの書き出し」が出来ない場合があります）

「昔ながらの手法で作られた映画」というのは、例えば、「ロッキー」「ニュー・シネマ・パラダイス」「ゴッドファーザー」「レオン」「十二人の怒れる男」「シャイニング」「スタンド・バイ・ミー」「レザボア・ドッグス」「サイコ」「男はつらいよ」のような作品です。

要は、カメラで撮影した映像を「カット」「入れ替え」しただけで構成した、オーソドックスな映画ということです。

これらの映画と同じような手法で制作する限り、編集ソフトはごくシンプルなもので充分と言えます。もし既にパソコンに編集ソフトが付属されているような場合は、それが使えるはずです。

「昔ながらの手法」で出来る映画の企画であれば、最低限の環境は揃っているということになります。

編集ソフトが無い場合、入手する方法は２つあります。

• 無料ソフトをダウンロードしてインストールする
• 有料ソフトを購入してインストールする

この選択は私もアドバイスに迷うところですが、やはり有料ソフトを購入することをオススメします。

無料ソフトは「使い勝手が悪い」というな傾向がありますが、それ以上に、インストール時に様々なトラブルに巻き込まれる危険があるからです。

無料ソフトは、誰かが好意で提供してくれるものではありません。必ず何らかのビジネス的な見返りを「仕込んで」提供しています。

特に外国製の無料ソフトの場合は、インストール時に色々な罠を仕掛けてきます。

パソコンやインターネットにかなり詳しい人でも、この罠に掛かって、「余計なもの」を一緒にインストールする羽目になります。

そうすると、別の関連商品をしつこく宣伝表示してくるだけでなく、パソコンの初期設定を改ざんして、例えば使用するブラウザソフトを、その国のものにすり替えたり、勝手に個人情報を抜き取って利用したりされることになります。

一旦、「余計なもの」をインストールしてしまうと、削除するのは極めて困難です。

これから楽しい趣味を始めるために必要なソフトを、たった数千円分節約しようとしたために、さらに大きな無駄を生み出すことは避けるべきでしょう。

そんな理由から、貧乏性の私も、有料ソフトをオススメする事にしています。

上記の「昔ながらの手法」で映画を作るなら、売れている定番ソフトの中で最も安いものを購入しても事足ります。

撮影時に発生する障害

「昔ながらの手法」はカメラの前にそのシーンの状況を用意して、そのまま撮影します。

シンプルですが、実は贅沢な撮影方法です。

シナリオに合わせた実物大のセットを作ったり、大人数で舞台となる場所に行って、ロケーションを行なったりすることは大変なコストが掛かります。

街なかなど、他の人がいる場所で撮影することは、そもそも周りの人に迷惑を掛けることになりますし、迷惑を掛けないように注意していても、「クレームをつけてくる人」、「通報する人」は近年、激増しています。

私たちが作る個人映画では、ごく普通のシナリオに合わせて撮影しようとしても、様々な制約が発生します。

• お金を掛けて撮影セットは作れない
• 条件の合う撮影場所が見つからない
• 本職の役者やスタッフのように、3泊4日で地方ロケを行なえない
• 大人数のスタッフ・出演者を色々な場所に移動させるコストが掛けられない
• スケジュールに余裕が無い
• 車を運転中の映像を前から撮影するなど、大掛かりな撮影ができない
• 電車の貸切などができないため、電車内の撮影ができない

多くは資金力が無いことが原因ですが、仮に湯水のようにお金を使えても、知識や技術の無いアマチュアがプロの真似をして大掛かりな撮影をしても、なかなか上手くはいかないでしょう。

「それじゃあ、趣味で映画なんて作れないじゃないか！」と思えるほど、制約だらけです。

しかし、このこの問題を一気に解決する武器が存在するのです。

制約を乗り越えるための武器が「特撮」

最近の映画やドラマを見て気付くことはないでしょうか？

まあ、作り手側からすると、本来、気付かれたくはないことなんですが、「映像を合成したシーンが非常に多い」んです。

それも、爆発シーンや非現実的な風景などはもちろんのこと、ごく普通の街のシーンにもデジタル合成が多用されています。特にアメリカのテレビドラマではこれが顕著です。

ビジネス街の交差点のシーン。

従来のドラマであれば、交通規制の許可を取って、大量のエキストラを配置して、その交差点で撮影していました。

しかし、現在ではそのコストが割に合わなくなってきたので、撮影は撮影所の駐車場で行なって、街なかの映像に合成する、とうような手法が一般的になってきているのです。

これが実現できるようになったのは、デジタル機器による撮影・編集技術の向上、特にグリーンバック合成技術の向上のおかげです。

そして、同様のグリーンバック合成は、私たちが使うパソコンレベルの環境でも、充分に実現できるようになったんです。

そうなると、撮影の制約はほとんど解決されます。

極端に言えば、出演者を全てグリーンバック撮影して、別撮りした背景と合成する、という手法を応用すれば、ほぼ、どんなシーンでも、安全に低コストで実現させることが出来るわけです。

室内シーンの撮影で、実際には無い窓やドアを合成することで、シナリオ通りの間取りの部屋を作ることも出来ます。

もっと大胆に、理想的な部屋のミニチュアセットを作って、人物をその中に合成してしまうのは、私も良く使う方法です。

美しい夕焼けの前でのシーンには憧れますが、

• 撮影の日に夕焼けが綺麗に出る
• 夕焼けが綺麗な、極めて短時間で必要な撮影を終える

という条件をクリアするのは至難の業です。

私なら、背景に使うための夕焼けは別撮りしてストックしておきます。

もちろん、合成しなくても撮影できるシーンは、従来通りの撮影をしてもいいでしょう。

映像を実現させるための選択肢として、「特撮」という手法を身に付けていれば、ほとんどどんなシーンでも作ることが可能です。（もちろん、技術レベルを上げることで、映像のレベルも上がっていきます）

特撮が前提の編集環境は？

このように「特撮」を前提すると、編集ソフトの選択も変わってきます。

• 映像のカット
• 映像の入れ替え
• データの書き出し

という基本機能に加えて、

• グリーンバック合成

という機能が必須になってきます。

最近の有料ソフトの多くは、このグリーンバック合成の機能を備えています。

購入されるときは、一応、これを確認したほうがいいでしょう。

「グリーンバック合成」のほか「クロマキー機能」という言い方をしていることもあります。

私は仕事でもビデオ編集をしていますので、有料ソフトのPremiere proを使っていますが、趣味で映画を作るためにはPremiere proのレベルまでは必要ないでしょう。

How to Prepare the Environment Needed for Personal Filmmaking

For Those Who Want to Make Their Own Films

It may not be a majority opinion, but there are people who say, “I want to make my own film.”

Having created independent films for over 30 years since my late teens, I know how fascinating the process is. So I genuinely want people with that desire to be able to make films themselves.

People often ask me, “How much does it cost to make a film?” or “What kind of camera do I need?”

The conclusion is that the cost varies widely. Depending on the project, even your entire savings might not be enough, while on the other hand, it’s also possible to start at a cost that is practically zero.

Here, I’ll propose an environment that can realistically be prepared within the range of an adult’s discretionary budget.

Filming Equipment

I’ll only touch briefly on cameras this time.

As long as the device can record video as digital data, anything is fine.

If your goal is simply “to get started,” you can begin without major issues even if all you have is a smartphone camera.

Of course, in terms of usability, a digital video camera is more suitable.

“Wouldn’t a DSLR with video capability be better?”

This is a common question, but to put it simply, I don’t recommend DSLRs for beginners. It’s unlikely that a beginner can shoot smoothly enough to take full advantage of a DSLR’s strengths.

Editing Environment

You may hear advertisements claiming, “With just a smartphone or tablet, you can shoot and edit everything.”
But this is merely saying, “It’s not impossible.”

It’s like saying, “As long as you have a charcoal grill and a pot, you can cook anything.”

Shooting might be manageable, but doing detailed video editing on a touchscreen is not realistic. (Although I think it could be an interesting challenge for advanced creators who intentionally work under such constraints.)

For editing, you should assume you’ll need a standard computer.

If you don’t already own one, you’ll need to obtain one.

To edit video, you need “video editing software.”

Video editing on a computer is called non-linear editing, which allows you to manipulate the digital footage you shot with considerable freedom. The degree of freedom varies depending on the software.

If your goal is simply to “edit in the same way films used to be made,” the necessary functions are:

• Cutting footage
• Rearranging footage
• Exporting the final data

These functions exist even in the simplest editing software.
(Exporting data means creating the final video file after editing. Some trial versions of software do not allow exporting.)

Films made using “traditional methods” include works like Rocky, Cinema Paradiso, The Godfather, Léon, 12 Angry Men, The Shining, Stand by Me, Reservoir Dogs, Psycho, and It’s Tough Being a Man.

In other words, these are orthodox films constructed simply by “cutting” and “rearranging” footage shot with a camera.

As long as you create films using similar methods, simple editing software is more than sufficient. If your computer already comes with editing software, it should work.

If your project can be made using “traditional methods,” then you already have the minimum environment needed.

If you don’t have editing software, there are two ways to obtain it:

• Download and install free software
• Purchase and install paid software

I hesitate to advise one way or the other, but ultimately I recommend purchasing paid software.

Free software often has poor usability, but more importantly, installing it carries the risk of various troubles.

Free software is not provided out of goodwill. It always includes some kind of business-driven “catch.”

Foreign-made free software in particular often hides traps during installation.

Even people who are quite knowledgeable about computers and the internet can fall into these traps and end up installing “unwanted extras.”

This results not only in persistent ads for related products, but also in unauthorized changes to your computer’s initial settings—such as switching your browser to one from that country—or even extracting and misusing your personal information.

Once “unwanted extras” are installed, removing them is extremely difficult.

Trying to save just a few thousand yen on software needed for a fun new hobby can end up causing far greater waste. That should be avoided.

For these reasons, even I—despite being frugal—recommend paid software.

If you’re making a film using the “traditional method,” the cheapest option among the popular paid software packages will be sufficient.

Obstacles That Arise During Filming

The “traditional method” involves preparing the scene in front of the camera and filming it as is.

It’s simple, but in reality, it’s a luxurious way to shoot.

Building full-scale sets to match the script or traveling with a large group to shoot on location requires enormous cost.

Filming in public places where other people are present inevitably causes inconvenience, and even if you try not to disturb anyone, the number of people who “complain” or “report you” has skyrocketed in recent years.

In the personal films we create, even when trying to shoot ordinary scenes, many constraints arise:

• You can’t afford to build sets
• You can’t find suitable filming locations
• You can’t take a 3–4 day trip for location shooting like professional actors and staff
• You can’t afford the cost of transporting large numbers of staff and cast
• Your schedule has no flexibility
• You can’t do large-scale shots, such as filming a car from the front while driving
• You can’t film inside a train because you can’t rent one out

Most of these issues stem from lack of funds, but even if you had unlimited money, amateurs without knowledge or skill would struggle to imitate professional large-scale shoots.

It’s enough to make you think, “Then it’s impossible to make a film as a hobby!”

But there is a weapon that can solve all these problems at once.

The Weapon That Overcomes These Constraints: Special Effects

Have you noticed something about recent films and TV dramas?

From a creator’s perspective, we’d prefer you didn’t notice, but there are an enormous number of composited scenes.

Not only explosions and fantastical landscapes—digital compositing is heavily used even in ordinary city scenes. This is especially true in American TV dramas.

Take a scene at a busy downtown intersection.

In traditional dramas, they would obtain permits, control traffic, gather large numbers of extras, and shoot on location.

But today, that cost is no longer practical. Instead, they shoot in a studio parking lot and composite it into footage of the city. This has become the standard method.

This became possible thanks to advances in digital filming and editing technology—especially improvements in green-screen compositing.

And now, the same green-screen compositing can be done even on the level of personal computers we use.

Once that becomes possible, most filming constraints disappear.

In extreme cases, you can shoot all actors against a green screen and composite them onto separately filmed backgrounds. This allows you to create almost any scene safely and at low cost.

For indoor scenes, you can composite windows or doors that don’t actually exist, creating a room layout that matches your script.

Or, more boldly, you can build a miniature of your ideal room and composite the actors into it—something I often do.

We all dream of shooting scenes against a beautiful sunset, but:

• The sunset must appear beautifully on the shooting day
• You must finish shooting within the extremely short window when the sunset is beautiful

Meeting these conditions is extremely difficult.

I would simply shoot the sunset separately and keep it in stock for later use.

Of course, scenes that can be shot without compositing can still be filmed traditionally.

But if you master “special effects” as one of your filmmaking options, you can create almost any scene. (And naturally, as your skills improve, so will the quality of your visuals.)

What Editing Environment Is Needed for Special Effects?

Once you assume the use of “special effects,” your choice of editing software changes.

In addition to the basic functions:

• Cutting footage
• Rearranging footage
• Exporting data

You now absolutely need:

• Green-screen compositing

Many modern paid software packages include green-screen compositing.

When purchasing, it’s best to confirm this feature.

Green-screen compositing may also be labeled as “chroma key.”

I use Premiere Pro for my professional editing work, but for hobby filmmaking, you don’t need anything as advanced as Premiere Pro.
